Know What to Change and What to Leave the Same
By: Kaye Z. Marks
You might be getting custom business cards, but that doesn’t mean that every single thing about the card needs to be custom.
There are certain things about a business card that are there for a reason. These are the aspects of a card that make it what it is, and makes sure it does the job it’s supposed to. Having clear contact information is part of that. If you have to struggle to find the contact information on a business card of all things you know you have the sign of a poor business card.
The same is true for your name. This is another little thing I’ve actually seen people regulate to the sidelines. They reduce the size of their name to such an extent I have to wonder why they even bother putting it on the business card to begin with.
A lot of this comes down to understanding two different things about custom business cards. The first is that you have to know why you’re getting that business card printing done. Is this just about handing people something cool to look at? If that’s the case I might suggest a postcard or some other type of marketing. Business cards are for giving people a way of contacting you. Yes, they can also be used for marketing, but don’t forget about their first purpose.
The second thing is that people go a little overboard in what they do to make their cards custom. It used to be that a full color business card was a rather custom one. Any kind of strong color was a way of drawing a person to the card and ensuring your card gets noticed.
These days with printing technology opening up the doors to all sorts of new ways to look at business cards, you have a whole slew of things you can do to vary up your card. But I wouldn’t try to alter every single thing about your card all at once.
Take the material for instance. Go for something different like plastic or wood, but leave the print on the card largely the same. Or go for a well-defined image on your card but keep using paper to do it with.
The more things you do to your card the less meaningful they start to become. You want those custom changes to stand out. If everything is custom, they start to look muddled up and confusing.
All of this comes down to know what you need to change and what you want to leave the same. Before you start getting any kind of custom changes to your business cards done, I would make sure you know exactly what your business cards need to do to work for you. If you don’t know that then you might not be ready to change things.
