Kindle the Portable Wireless E-book Reader from Amazon
By: Michael jones
The Kindle lacks design style associated with Apple products. The easily marked , plastic white finish on the case and overall feeling of cheapness detracts from the Kindles innovative functions and abilities.
Placement of the page forward and page back buttons is not well thought out as they are sensitive and are activated as the unit is handled. Put it in the dysfunctional cover and you will move the page setting one way or the other. This can be very frustrating.
Did I say a cover ? Well that is about all it is. Bad design. Flimsy , covers the power switch at the back of the unit and makes it very awkward to access. The reader must be removed from the cover each time. The Kindle cover is reminiscent of the plastic type that small pocket calculators used to have. The type with the transparent plastic over 2 corners to stop the unit falling out. No doubt third party suppliers will resolve that problem promptly.
The battery is a removable unit hidden behind a clip-on cover. That innovation is great as a back-up can be used while the other is being charged. Battery life is 5 hours which is more than sufficient for most trips or long spells of travel between charges. Hidden under the back cover is the port for the memory card. This is just silly, as cards can be swapped out and for this to happen the unit must be removed from the cover, the clip-on back cover plate must be removed and then only can you insert or remove the memory card. The Amazon Kindle uses SD cards and can store over 200 titles without adding additional memory being added.
With Amazon's vast array of books , 110 000 of them , it s unlikely that the owner will run out of options. Getting new material is a cinch as the wireless connection allows you to access the Kindle store and buy whatever your heart desires in the way of books. Pricing is excellent as most best sellers go for $9.99 . A huge saving over paper books.
Added features of the Kindle are blog and RSS feeds, internet access, e-mail and publications can be subscribed to. In fact the Kindle store offers a wide variety of local and international journals. The wireless connectivity means that you have your favorite subscriptions available when you are traveling. For those who need access to large reference manuals such as students , doctors , attorneys etc the Amazon Kindle does that for you and is capable of storing scanned images as well so input is a breeze via the USB port.
The large qwerty keypad makes browsing and internet or local annotation and search functions very easy.Wikipedia is freely accessible via the wireless capability of the kindle and combined with the Kindle's own built-in dictionary this should more than suffice.
One of the outstanding features is the ability to enlarge the text. THIS alone is a huge plus. Most cell & wireless devices fail miserably on this count but the Kindle makes reading for all eye types effortless. The kindle's small size makes reading in bed or at an angle very comfortable.
The clever design of the screen allows the Kindle to be used in bright lights. This also reduces the heat being produced by the Kindle and stops it from getting uncomfortably warm. The lack of heat enhances the reading pleasure, which means you can read and enjoy the books as long as you like. Surprisingly, the crisp black and white display uses ink electronically, to mimic that of books and newspapers.Back lighting is unnecessary reducing the glare associated with other electronic devices.
A vast array of audio books can also be loaded via the USB port and compatibility with a wide range of formats such as MS word, TXT, JPEG, HTML,PNG,BMP,and MOBI files ensures that almost any document can be forwarded to the Kindle via the free e-mail address provided with the unit. The transfer does however incur a small cost of $0.10 cents per transcript. The kindle also has a web browser of it's own for internet access.
Wireless coverage , although using Whispernet and EVDO from sprint is still limited in western USA particularly in Montana and Alaska but Amazon has a web page detailing the exact coverage available. It would be a good idea to check this prior to purchase.Hot spots are a thing of the past so now you can read and access content while traveling with Amazon's optimized wireless technology.
The Amazon Kindle is truly an innovation which is going to change the way we live and boost the flagging electronic book market. Books cannot be shared at this stage which resolves much of the electronic piracy issues that are always a concern on the internet.
