Is A Restaurant Franchise Right For You?

By: Patricia Farnham

There are plenty of well known franchise restaurants out there that people frequent when they travel. They know exactly what they are going to get when they walk into the door. This is a comfort zone that many people get into because food is very important. No one wants to pay money for a meal that they didn't find to be satisfying. Since franchise restaurants are so appealing to consumers, you can be sure they are appealing from the prospective of a business owner as well. Is a restaurant franchise right for you?

There are some pros and cons to operating a chain restaurant that you really need to be aware of before you make the decision. The reputation of the entire chain is going to affect your business. This can be a good thing because you may be able to open the doors and people are going to rush in steadily. They already know what you have to offer so you don't have to work hard to get them in the door. You still have to offer quality food and service though to keep them coming back.

Yet not all of the publicity that comes from franchise restaurants is positive. I am sure you have heard plenty of stories in the news and online lately. Such incidents are quite isolated but they still have a huge impact on all of the franchise locations. It takes time to regain the trust of consumers. In the mean time you may have to struggle with the fact that your business revenue has decreased substantially. Give it time though and the incident will likely pass.

If you want to offer your own food products and do things your way, then a franchise isn't going to be for you. Since you will have their name on your business there are certain conditions you have to abide by. They will want you to make the food and operate the business in a certain way. All of this training will be provided for you though so you won't be left alone to wing it as you are with your own business.

With a chain restaurant, you will get plenty of guidance and training. They will make sure you have all the key elements you need to be a successful business owner. You may find this to offer you the encouragement you need to move forward with opening your own business. Keep in mind that your individuality will be limited with this type of business operation though.

You are going to need to have some money saved up for a down payment on the chain restaurant. Even though you can get a large percentage of the cost financed either with them directly or with a private lender, they will expect you to have some money to invest. This would be the same with your own restaurant though too as a lender isn't going to give you 100% of what it will take to get it off the ground.

Take some time to talk to other owner's of chain restaurants. Find out what they like and don't like about the business. You can even find some of this information online at various sites including blogs and forums. Look for consistent themes so you can identify issues that you will need to address that relate to you and owning a chain restaurant.

If you are serious about operating your own restaurant, you really need to discover which is a better option for you. Cover all the bases and see which one comes out in your favor. Many people are happy and successful operating their own business. Others aren't, and do very well when they are part of a chain restaurant. One isn't necessarily better than the other so take your time making this important decision.
