Interested in Becoming A Chiropractor?

By: Barry Friedmann

If you wish to pursue a career as a chiropractor, you will first need to obtain a chiropractic degree in the philosophy of chiropractic. You will need to be well-versed in chiropractic principles. Other than theoretical knowledge, You will also need practical knowledge on how to treat patients, how to effectively understand symptoms and what course of action should be undertaken in different scenarios.

Chiropractors practice an alternative medicine which is gaining wide popularity. Unfortunately there are limited numbers of chiropractic schools in the USA. Many of those wishing to train as a chiropractor have to move to other countries to obtain their degree.

In order to become a chiropractor, you need to have a chiropractor license. In the USA, these licenses are only valid in the state where you acquired the license. Licenses are usually provided to those who have got at least two to four years of undergraduate education and to those that have done a 4 year college course in chiropractic.

The course enables you to get a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. However, one later needs to attend state and national exams. Certificates for chiropractic are awarded in specific areas, including neurology, nutrition, industrial health, internal disorders, sports injuries, thermography, occupational health and diagnostic imaging. Without a chiropractic license you will not be allowed to practice as a chiropractor.

Chiropractors deal closely with their patients. There is often body contact during treatment. To be a chiropractor, you need to understand this. You will need to exercise zeal and lots and lots of patience. The effects of chiropractic treatment won't always be seen quickly - you will need to convince the patient to follow your advice in order for your treatment to be effective.

You will need to have good communication skills to become a chiropractor. You should be able to effectively teach your patients what they need to do. Inter-personal skills are also extremely important, as it is important for your patient to believe in you and feel confident with your skills.

There are two types of chiropractic practice which are prevalent today - called straight and mixer. The oldest form of chiropractic principle is straight - it is based on the teachings of B.J. Palmer and D.D. Palmer. Mixer chiropractor is a much newer concept where chiropractors mix the chiropractic principles with other forms of medical practices.

Chiropractor can choose to work in the private sector or to work in a hospital. Anyone wishing to become a chiropractor may be pleasantly surprised to hear that chiropractor salaries are increasing on an ongoing basis. Usually, salaries range from about USD45,000 to about USD102,000 per annum. At present, the average salary of a United States chiropractor is about US$81,500 per annum. Salaries earned by chiropractors usually depend on their experience and their qualifications.

If you really want to become a chiropractor, then my advice would be to go for it - money won't be a problem once you are educated and your practice is set up and licensed.
