Cell phones can be categorized into three groups basic ohones, multimedia phones and smart phones. Basic phones are plain vanilla phones only meant for those who want a phone for nothing else but communication for calling and text messaging. A few games may come in as a bonus. Multimedia phones offer much more than what the basic phones do; you can click and share pictures, shoot videos, listen to your favorite tracks, surf the web and a whole lot more fun stuff. Smart phones are the best of the lot—they integrate the features of a phone and a PDA and these devices are virtual computers in a palm-sized form factor. Apart from entertainment, what makes a smart phone 'smart' are its business features such as an integrated Office suite, Wi-Fi connectivity, web browser, e-mail client and file manager.

Multimedia Phones : If you are looking for a multimedia phone you need to first decide whether you need it for music, imaging, gaming and video specifically or all of these. Music: For a music phone, storage space and memory expansion are the most important criteria. In addition to the phone's internal memory, an external 1 GB memory card can hold approximately 250 MP3 songs. If you're a music buff look for a cell phone that offers storage space in gigabytes on a micro drive. Music management is a crucial feature when a phone is loaded with hundreds of songs. Managing your music becomes a breeze when you can sort the songs by artist, album, genre, and so on. When it comes to queuing songs, the play list management feature should not be ignored. The media player should allow creating play lists, shuffling and repeating songs on-the-fly. Finally, listening pleasure comes from the earphones that come bundled with the phone so make sure the earphones have good response and do justice to the music player. If the phone features a 3.5 mm jack, then it is a boon because you can use your own pair of earphones or even connect it to a sound system using line input (AUX). Models like Nokia N-Series or Sony Walkman Series fit this category well. They cost anywhere between Rs 8,000 and Rs 15,000. Imaging: For an imaging phone, the resolution of the camera is the most important factor. The higher the resolution, the greater the details captured. A minimum of 1.3 megapixels should suffice for casual photography. However, if you are looking for image quality comparable to an average digital camera, a phone that integrates a 3.2 MP image sensor with an integrated flash is a must. Also, look for additional options like auto-focus, white balance and ISO settings, shooting modes and effects to get much better details and color reproduction. Models like Sony Ericsson K790i, Sony Ericsson K750i or Nokia N73 are a few examples that match this category of phones.
Smart Phones: Smart phones combine the features of a cell phone and a PDA making it suitable for executives and people who need to work while on the move. You need to pick your smart phone depending upon your application and use.
Office use: If you want a phone for office applications such as web and e-mail access, word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, you should ignore multimedia features. Look out for features like file synchronization, document viewers and compatibility with MS Office. If you're used to Windows and MS Office, make sure you settle for a phone based on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 or above. To surf the Internet at Wi-Fi hotspots like cafe's and airports, remember to check for built-in Wi-Fi capability in the phone. For ease of typing e-mails, messages or web addresses, the presence of a QWERTY keyboard is helpful. Models like the 02 Atom, Sony Ericsson P990i, Nokia E70 are recommended for office applications.
Multimedia: If you want multimedia features with office applications, look out for a powerful integrated camera having flash and auto focus. The screen resolution and audio/video format support are crucial. Phones based on Microsoft Windows Mobile are best suited for entertainment as Windows Media Player comes in as a part of the Operating System. As multimedia applications are CPU intensive, it is advisable to opt for a phone armed with a powerful processor for smooth video playback. Tow great examples of such phones are the Asus P535 and Sony Ericsson P990L
