How the Electric Guitar was Born
By: Vincent Roarden
Do you ever wonder when, how and why the electric guitar began to rock our music world?
The first electric guitar was made in the 1930s. At first, it was criticized. But it was before its time and the sound was too unique. As people began to realize that the electric guitar was more versatile and had a unique personality, it began to rise in popularity.
The electric guitar's importance became known at the time when jazz orchestras multiplied in number. The electric guitar was originally designed by a collection of guitar manufacturers, electronics aficionados, and instrument producers.
It all began when Les Paul, a guitar modernizer played around with guitars and microphones. The first acknowledged use of the electric guitar was during October 1932 in Wichita, Kansas when Gage Brewer, a guitarist and band leader, performed with it.
Brewer received two of the instruments straight from George Beauchamp of Los Angeles, California and made them known in an article published in the Wichita Beacon, October 2, 1932. Later that month, he played them at a Halloween performance. But of course, mere usage isn't enough its beauty must be recorded to endure the test of time.
The first electric guitar recording was, contrary to popular belief not by Eddie Durham but it was in Chicago in 1938, by a jazz artist known as George Barnes. He recorded two songs, Sweetheart Land and It's a Low-Down Dirty Shame.
In 1931, Paul Barth, Adolph Rickenbacker, and George Beauchamp established the company that developed the first electric guitars which became available to the general public.
The company's mass-produced electric guitars were created from cast aluminum, and these were actually played on a person's lap using a steel slide. This is somewhat similar to the steel guitar at present. Due to its unusual material, these guitars were affectionately called "Frying Pans".
The first commercially successfully guitar was made by a radio repairman named Leo Fender. As a solid-bodied guitar it was different from the hollow Jazz-style guitars that had been made previously. Called the "Esquire" it quickly became a favorite of Californian country and western guitarists.
