How To Profit From A Home-Based House Cleaning Business

By: Toni Chainbridge

You will be surprised to learn how easy it is to make money from your very own house cleaning business. Not sure where to start? Let me show you how to set up and profit from a home-based house cleaning business.

House cleaning is in big demand at the moment and it will continue to be in demand over the coming years. The reason being is that peoples' lifestyles have changed and more and more people are turning to house cleaning services to help free up some of their time.

You have to decide if you want some of this action now - while the demand is huge and still growing. Starting your own house cleaning business has never been at a better time than today.

Below are the main points you need to know to start-up as an Independent Cleaner.

Choosing a Name For Your Business:

Identifying a name for your business is very important. This gives you an identity and is also needed for advertising purposes. Look through your local Yellow Pages to give you an idea of names in the house cleaning section. Don't copy any name, but think of something similar along those lines.

An identify for your business is very important and a good name helps provide this. Just because you want to work on your own as an independent cleaner doesn't mean that you should not take your business serious, because you should.

Identifying Your Customers and Territory:

Knowing who you want to target and where they live is one of the first steps you need to take. Remember, if you have your own transport then you will be able to get around faster and do more cleans per day. If you need to rely on public transport to get from A to B then this will reduce your cleans significantly. Don't forget to take this into account when taking on new clients.

Finding customers who live near you should be a priority if you don't have your own transport. If this is the case, then you need to find out if these people have surplus money to pay for a cleaning service?

So basically you need to know who can afford to pay for a cleaner. You also need to know if there are enough of these premium customers within a certain proximity of each other? Ideally you would want as many customers as close to each other as possible. This way you can do more cleans per day and not lose too much time travelling from one customer to another.

Set-Up Costs:

As an Independent Cleaner, there is very little you need to buy to start your own business. Most Independent Cleaners tend to use the cleaning products and equipment of their customers. So you won't need to buy any cleaning products. This is the main reason why you will make a healthy profit!

Let's take a look at what you can spend a few dollars on to set-up shop:

o An apron and tabard

o Advertising

o Money spent on travel

Price Structure:

Setting a price structure is your next step. My advice would be to call your competitors, found in your Yellow Pages. Pretend you are an enquirer and ask what they charge.

You can then set your hourly rate in proportion with your competitors. Whether you choose to undercut them, charge the same, or set your prices slightly higher is totally up to you.

Marketing:

You need to let everyone who you want to target know about you. The most beneficial and cost-effective way is to make or have printed, small flyers. Get these put through your target customers' letterboxes by the hundreds.

Simply type up your flyer in a word processing document, or get somebody to do this for you. Try and put at least two flyers on one page. Take these your local library or wherever has a photocopier. Get them copied as many times as you can afford.

Get your flyers distributed by the bucket-load. This doesn't take as long as you think. You never know, when you return home you might have a message on your answer machine!

Depending on your budget, you could think about putting an ad in the Yellow Pages. Don't worry if you can't afford it, put one in next year instead.

Expansion:

Now that you have a full client list of your own you might consider hiring some help. This is just the start of things, you could end up hiring dozens of cleaners and put your own feet up!

All you need to do is advertise in a local newspaper. When you have chosen someone who you like, simply take them with you on your cleans and they will soon pick up your cleaning routines and methods.

Once you are happy and confident that he/she can go and clean on their own, you can then either have some free time to yourself or double your customer base.

You don't have to stop at one cleaner. Now you can 'manage' them, start 'managing' more...
