There can be problems with affiliate marketing - if you join up to single programs then there is no guarantee that the company will pay you, which can be annoying when you spent time and money to get people to their site. It is unbelievable that they would treat people this way who are making them money and who will obviously stop making them money when they realise what is going on! It is much safer to join a network which manages a group of sites and deals with all the payments to you and deals with any problems. Clickbank is a leading network that you can join up to in minutes and start promoting products.
Paydotcom.com is another network recommended network, they allow you to be paid straight to your PayPal account instead of waiting for a cheque to come every 2 weeks from Clickbank, but they do not have anywhere as many products to promote.
Once you are up and running on an affiliate network then you need to browse the site for websites and products that match the area you want to market in. Most of the networks have statistics that allow you to pinpoint popular sites. This means you can direct traffic to sites that you know will convert them into customers and make you money. Don't avoid the sites with less statistics though as they may just be new, and you could get in before other affiliates and promote that site first before it become popular.
If a site makes a lot of sales but the product is poor then you do not want to associate yourself with it. People judge your site by what you recommend and advertise, so it is not worth jeopardizing your sites reputation for some quick money. For instance, around SuperBowl time, HD TVs will be very popular and sell well. People are buying these things all day long so you might as well make some money by being the person to refer them to the site!

The most popular ways are to pay for advertising, or to write articles and create websites with articles on which draw visitors from the search engines and then you have the link somewhere on the site. You need to make the visitor want to click the link, so reviews are good, you could review something that is sold on Amazon and then put the link below for them to go and buy it if they are interested.
To make good money as an affiliate marketer online you are going to have devote the time to learn how to do it effectively, visit forums on the subject, buy some material, but more importantly, take action and learn as you go along! If you put the effort into this then the potential is huge as you increase the number of sites and promotions you have, but before you get your first million you need to get your first dollar... so get out there and give it a try.
