How To Dress A Baby.....Before It Is Born
By: Rick London
Since all women dressed baggy in the dark ages, maternity wear probably existed before it actually had the label "maternity wear". It was simply known as baggy clothes.
Finally in the mid 19th century, some of the taboos regarding maternity wear were loosened and maternity clothing was marketed and sold. It became a hit, in spite of the objections of many puritans who felt pregnancy was something, still, to be kept in the closet.
Even before the 19th century, however, during the Georgian period, such reformers as Rousseau, made certain that the mother-to-be was dressed correctly. The upper-class woman wore a special dress that would "grow with her" but was not necessarily called maternity wear, simply a dress that stretched. Of course everyone knew why it stretched; but still the word was "hush" on the street, rather than "she is pregnant".
