How Safe Are Acupuncture Needles?

By: Barry Friedmann

With different diseases in the world today, especially those caused by needles that are unclean, the safety of acupuncture needles is of concern to many people. Fortunately in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has strict guidelines on acupuncture needles such as the requirement they be sterile and used only one time. Of course, in spite of these safety mechanisms that are in place, some people will still be fearful at the thoughts of any kind of needles including acupuncture needles. Making certain to choose an experienced practitioner can allay some of those fears.

In addition to sterile needles, a patient may fear pain from the acupuncture needles. A search of various types of acupuncture needles shows the existence of even painless ones. In addition to painless needles easing the stress level of the patient, the acupuncturist can avoid the possibility of an automatic reflex from the patient upon insertion of the needles. Painless acupuncture needles allows the patient more comfort during the procedure, thus creating a lower stress level that will allow the procedure to work more effectively.

The success achieved with any procedure is improved by the patient's ability to relax. It is hard for a patient to relax during a painful procedure, so therefore may not achieve the same level of success as when a painless needle is used. This will certainly differ from patient to patient, but when the patient already fears needles, the practitioner will not help anyone by inflicting pain that is avoidable. The pain of the acupuncture needles should be less than the pain from which the patient seeks relief, so people will consider it worth the effort; others are not keen to seek relief from pain by enduring other pain.

If you have a problem with painful needles, you should ask about using painless needles when searching for an acupuncture practitioner. The practitioner may not have them in his office but should be willing to order them in for you. On the other hand, you may be able to choose a practitioner who uses nothing but painless acupuncture needles. Whilst acupuncture used to be a procedure that patients expected to be painful, today's new technology makes pain the exception rather than the rule.

Some people fear infection from unclean needles, in addition to the pain from the acupuncture needles. Visiting the practitioner before treatment will help a patient to ease their fears and show that the practitioner has a clean office and invests in sanitary, disposable acupuncture needles. Displaying concerns for the safety and well-being of patients helps to ease fears and tension from patients being treated. Without the fear or tension, patients respond better to treatment.

Concerned About the Saety of Acupuncture Needles?

In the United States the Food and Drug Administration have a policy outlined that needles used for acupuncture are sterile and to be used only once. Federal law restricts distributors from selling needles to unqualified practitioners. Because of the variety of diseases around these days, it is of great concern to many people that by allowing a practitioner to use needles on them there may be a risk involved. It would be best to select an experienced and recommended acupuncturist to avoid the anxiety and fears of undergoing this treatment.

There is an added bonus of using painless needles, besides the practitioners using sterile needles. This is extremely beneficial to those who are fearful of needles and who may automatically jerk or tense-up when the needles are inserted. The benefits of using painless needles would be immeasurable to the patient, as the whole experience could become relaxing, comfortable and completely stress free. The treatment would therefore be more beneficial too.

If any patient is scared of needles and is distressed or suffering pain during any procedure, they will be unable to relax, their muscles will be tight and this could complicate the success of the whole treatment. When the patient relaxes comfortably, the outcome of the procedure using painless acupuncture needles will definitely be a success. The success level of any procedure is improved by the patient's ability to relax.

The endurance of painful acupuncture needles does not allow the relaxation of the patient, and therefore may not afford the same level of success as a painless needle. Certainly this differs from patient to patient, but when you have someone who already fears needles, you are not going to help him or her by inflicting pain that is avoidable.
