How Much Should A Poker Chip Weigh?

By: Thom Riemersma

As you navigate the many choices available to you for poker chips, you're bound to notice that each style of chip seems to come in a variety of different weights. You can get poker chips weighing 6 grams, 9 grams, 10 grams, 11.5 grams, 13 grams, whatever! But how much should a poker chip weigh?

The real answer is, "What ever weight feels best to you." But most people aren't happy with that answer. Most people want to know what weight is correct. Again, the answer is a very non-committal "that depends".

When you really get down to basics, most chips are around 11.5 grams. The reason for this is unknown; perhaps it is just that there are a few more chips with this weight. Your usual poker player probably plays with chips of this weight because they are readily available and he does not go to the casino regularly.

However when you get into the size and weight of casino chips the whole complexion of chip weight becomes more obscure. It is certainly not 11.5 grams.

For instance the weight of a Las Vegas casino chip has some variables. The average chip is 10 grams. This is very likely to do with the weight of the clay in a certain size of chip. There are heavier chips of about 13 grams, but these have metal flakes added to make them heavier.

So the official weight of a poker chip is really 10 grams. However you should still go by your personal preference. You may not feel comfortable with the light feel of the 10 gram chip and want to go for the 13 gram style.

Whatever you choose, make sure it's something that your home-game friends will be happy playing with for a long time because a happy player is a loose player.
