How Liquid Dancing Came To Be

By: Chris Channing

The name liquid dancing could speak for itself, as it does indeed include many dance moves that appear liquid in movement. But in actuality, liquid dancing is usually a "melting pot" of other dance techniques found in funk, interpretive dance, and other styles of artistic dance.

It has long been debated as to what exactly liquid dancing is. Many claim that it is just other styles of dances with a few tricks mixed in. Others say that the dance type is a style in all its own, as it originates from the club era and has true roots in dancing history. Either way, the dancing style is defined as borrowing moves from other styles, so in effect both sides of the debate could be true.

Liquid dancing is simple enough to get down in theory, but actually going about doing the dance when in the midst of others can prove to be a task in itself. Liquid dancing focuses on being in tune with rhythm, in which case just reading about the dance moves will do little for those who wish to practice the acclaimed dancing style. Without the rhythm in check, it's said that liquid dancing is not being performed.

The moves that belong to the ways and styles of the liquid dancing technique are vast. Of the more popular moves is the "trace" move. The trace is simple- just trace an outline, usually one's body, in a fluid and eloquent manner. Other motions such as the "wave" will give the impression that one's body is fluidly conforming to the waves found in oceans, in a very peaceful and tranquil state.

A vastly popular extension of the liquid dancing technique is to use glowsticks to give a truly psychedelic and "trippy" effect for trance goers. Glowsticking, as it is called, uses light emitting devices often held in the hands to help in the process of expressing the motions that makeup that liquid dance moves. Glowsticks draw more attention, attract more appeal, and are cheap ornaments to a truly great dancing style. It should be noted, however, that clubs have largely banned the item due to misuse, injury, and other factors.

Learning the liquid dancing style isn't hard like some dance techniques. This is because liquid dancing primarily focuses on rhythm and visual appeal instead of complex maneuvers and attention grabbing techniques. Liquid dancing can, however, use harder to learn tricks- and in which case an online video or a trip to the rental store will be necessary, as many liquid dancing moves are visual oriented. The good news is that much of the dancing style can be learned by visiting a club, watching videos, and reading more in just a few days.

In Conclusion

In the end, the common rave party or trance scene wouldn't be what they are today without the smooth moves obtained in passing on the techniques of the liquid dancing maneuvers. There is much to learn in the technique, but much will be found on one's one as creativity and inspiration comes from the rhythms in music, others around the person in question, and the lighting environment of the party or club. Keep in mind that to truly master the dancing style, practice makes perfect.
