Hair Dyes

By: Mich Crawley

Many women have been using hair dyes to colour their hair for years. These hair dyes make someone blonde or brown or any other colour a person wishes their hair to be. There is always controversy regarding whether hair dyes are reliable for certain health related problems. The chemicals used in hair dyes are often very harsh. If used improperly you could have hair loss within a couple of days. It is no joke when the package says you can experience total loss of hair if you use a product. This can happen. To determine if you will have hair loss, cancer, or even a severe rash occur because of hair dyes you need to understand the chemicals used in these hair dyes.

If you are using an off the shelf hair dye from a place like Boots you will find that these products do not have as toxic a chemical in them. This means the bleach is not as strong. The chances of these hair dyes causing long term affects is limited, but it is still possible. You are exposing your scalp to bleach every time you dye your hair. Bleach can be extremely harmful to a person’s skin. It may dry it out to where it is painful, and it can cause a loss of hair.

Hair dyes used in a professional salon tend to be even harsher in their chemical components. This is because the hair stylists employed have a license to use these products. The bleach used is a higher oxide, which means the potential for disaster is even higher than the locally sold packages of hair dye in markets. These hair dyes can cause hair loss if kept on too long. The hair loss can even be complete. You can go bald from using these chemicals improperly while you are waiting for the effects to take affect. If you do not rinse the hair completely a person can have hair loss as well as being uncomfortable. Have you ever sat in a chair at a stylist before and felt the itchy sensation? This is your head reacting to the chemicals. It is telling you that these chemicals you are using are damaging your scalp. You may lose hair in a small patch that is unnoticeable if you have a severe allergic reaction to the chemicals. You may even have a rash for from the irritation. The last known affect to be associated with hair dyes is cancer.

Animals have been tested to see the harmful affects of hair dye. Most of them contract cancer. If you use hair dye for a prolonged period during your life chances are you may incur cancer. It may be mild such as skin cancer that can be treated or more detrimental in relation to the bleach you have used consistently.

The idea is to realise that not all severe reactions occur on everyone. Someone may go through life not having any issues with hair dye. It will depend upon their skin sensitivity and predilection for disease. In other words it may just be a genetic allergic reaction. If you are using hair dye and you experience detrimental effects the first thing you need to do is see a doctor as well as stop the use of these chemicals. By nature most synthetically created chemicals turn out to be harmful in some way to individuals. We have seen a rash of articles lately about the severe reactions people have been having with hair dyes. The only way to discontinue this is to stop the use of hair dyes. If you have not coloured your hair before, you may ask for a test spot to see if you are allergic to the chemicals.

Another problem with hair dyes is that they are extremely hard to wash out of your hair once applied. Most stylists are able to rinse and wash your hair thoroughly, but if you are performing the job at home you may not be as careful as they are taught to be. You need to make sure that all the hair dye is out of your hair. The best way to test this is by letting the water run through your hair until it is clear when you rinse. Once the water has remained clear for at least five minutes you can then apply the shampoo. Keep in mind chemical reactions do happen so you may want to be careful in the shampoo you use after colouring your hair. Asking a stylist for proper hair dying techniques is important also.
