Getting a tattoo or a piercing “job”

By: ingrid sure

So this is the D day! You are going to get a symbolic tattoo or, at least, a tiny eyebrow piercing, right? But is so hard to choose one, especially when you have an one hour “appointment” at the tattoo studio. It's better to check up first on the Internet.

It's enough to visit one professional tattoo gallery or piercing gallery to find hundreds of pictures of tattoo, also online stores with contacts of tattoo artists and body piercers. Check out, also, tattoo programs featured on cable and satellite TV channels for more ideas and just some interesting background information on the history and art of tattooing. Take note of other people you come into contact with that have interesting tattoo design. Ask them where they went and who did the tattoo, and how they came up with their particular tattoo design.

But let's get on with some general tattoo designs. You can always choose to have personalized tattoos, why not. Say... a “Love Anna” tattoo imprinted near your heart. But come to think of this: will the message have its same meaning several years from now? If you can't answer that straight, then go for more universal design. Many people with tattoos decide to remove one or two because the meaning is already lost.

If you don't want that to happen, your best option would be a tattoo that features universality, yet is distinctive for your own personality – a symbol. Symbols have been practiced for thousands of years for religious, magical and sacred reasons. We have become so bombarded by advertising images that we are almost immune to their presence. It is not surprising that symbols and seals would be used as tattoos. Many people are beginning to suggest that the placement of sacred symbols on their bodies can help with illness or grief.

If you are a girl, there are special girl tattoos models that symbolize deep affection, sensitivity and emotions. You often see on the back of their necks butterfly tattoos, on their higher arm little star tattoos and fairy tattoos, or just above their hearts, a black heart tattoo. Nowadays, more and more teenage girls want to get a Britney Spears tattoo. Be careful... this is kind of personalized! And certainly not unique!

When it comes to masculine tattoo art, the most common choice would be tribal tattoos and Celtic designs. While they are very artistic in nature, they do not posses any implicit meanings that will change afterwards, which makes them almost a perfect match. Inspired by mysteries, myths and legendary characters, perception of religion and mysticism, tribal and Celtic tattoo ideas can fit any character. You can always go for a cross tattoo, if you are the religious type. Not just once I've seen priests embedded with crosses.

So, can we still say that the trend of tattooing is corrupting our society like our elders said it would? It is tough to tell these days.

When men first started piercing their ears they were thought to be homosexual. Now, it is normal to see a man with both ears pierced and people don't take a second look. The rapidly increasing popularity of tattoos is a natural progression in our culture, like that of the movement from horse drawn carriages to motorized vehicles.

My answer is a simple one: let them think what they want, it's important that you like it.
