Following Your Passions down a Different Path
By: Healthy Wealthy nWise
Debra Poneman is the President of "Yes to Success," a company she founded because it was always her dream to make a difference in people's lives. "Yes to Success" helps people create true success and prosperity, enjoy deep and lasting happiness, and realize their biggest dreams. Almost overnight, her seminars went from having 10 participants to thousands of participants.
Debra was becoming a regular on radio and television talks shows, and she was even in negotiations for her own television talk show. On the outside, it seemed she had it all. She was very successful, but success doesn't necessarily equal fulfillment, as she would soon realize.
With the birth of her first child came the birth of a new passion for Debra: being a stay at home mom. With phone call after phone call of people asking her to come back to work, she knew her hectic life needed to be put on hold. She didn't feel as if she was throwing her dreams out the window. She was simply taking a detour to reach them.
Debra joined a popular work at home company called Melaleuca, a business that prides itself on allowing moms to fit work into their family rather than fitting family into their work. Instead of sleeping night after night in a lonely hotel, she was tucking her children into bed.
Speaking of children, it's amazing how they can sometimes lead us back to the path we once lost. Debra's path had once been the desire to write an inspirational book. One evening, her son asked her to watch a new talent show with him on television. The show was American Idol, and the rest is history!
Debra wasn't very keen on watching another boring televised talent show, but she loved every minute of being with her son, so of course she joined him. What she saw was the first season of the mega-hit reality show, American Idol, and like so many other fans, she was an "idol" worshipper in no time!
Marci Shimoff, a dear friend of Debra's, had fallen in love with the show as well. Marci had already written successful inspirational books, including a couple of titles in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. One night while discussing the show, they both realized what they wanted to do: write a Chicken Soup book called "Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul."
American Idol is all about living your dreams and never giving up. That's exactly what Debra was doing her entire life. When contestants are booted off the show, they try again the following year. When Debra's life was on hold for her children, she kept the inspirational book idea in the back of her mind.
Debra tells the stories of several of the contestants in her book, "Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul." It's a testament to people's belief in themselves, and it's a way to show ordinary people doing extraordinary things. So what if you're not a singer? Debra wants people to realize they can be the best at whatever it is they want to do. Just don't give up when the Simon Cowell's of the world knock you down.
