Euro Pallets: Why European Importers Ask For Them
By: Ron Wood
Import companies in Europe frequently tell American suppliers to send their goods on europallets.
Why are euro pallets so special? Below are six of the most important facts about euro pallets and why European companies are asking for them.
First the euro pallet type has a value in Europe even if it is used. Local pallet recyclers will buy back used euro pallets from companies who no longer have a use for them, because the pallet is designed for reuse.
Europallets are also widely known as the common standard for the European industry and flow seamlessly through supply chains there. Expensive or hazardous products like drugs, chemicals, medical equipment, and automobile parts are typically shipped in Europe on europallets and then processed in automated material handling systems that only accept the euro pallet type. Companies with such automated warehouses must pay significant costs and face delays in their supply chain when they are forced to trans-load goods from American pallet types on to the europallets.
Also, stringer pallets built in North America create costly disposal fees for European import companies because they are subject to packaging waste disposal taxes that are as high as $6 per pallet. In many European countries virtually all of the land fills are closed. However because europallets can be exchanged, they are not subject to waste taxes until they are no long repairable.
The euro pallet type is subject to high quality control standards. The European Pallet Association, founded in the early 1990s is responsible for making sure euro pallet manufacturers worldwide adhere to the same quality control measures to ensure the long term safe reuse of the pallet type.
The euro pallet is also one of only six types in the entire world recognized by the highly respected International Organization for Standardization, making it truly a global platform.
Finally, genuine Euro pallets can be traced by their markings, giving users a quick way to identify the manufacturer which thereby improves quality in the marketplace. Customs officials and other authorities in the European Union often aggressively prosecute companies that attempt to build or use fake euro pallets.
