Do You Know What Double Tapping Your iPhone Screen Does?
By: Chris Simpson
The first thing you will probably have done when you got your Apple iPhone would be to have spent a few days playing about with all the various features and applications so that you get a good idea how everything works. Did you know, however, that as well as all the obvious functions that you see displayed on the touch screen there are also a few hidden ones? Not a lot of people take the time to learn these because the iPhone is so easy to use that they don't think there is anything else to learn about using it.
However, this is very common, because when you have a product like the iPhone, there are so many blatant features that searching for the hidden ones can seem monotonous and even unnecessary. Yet, if you want to experience all that you are iPhone can do for you, than you must take some time to uncover these hidden tricks.
When you are interacting with your iPhone you will usually single tap on something to tell the phone what you want it to do. Pretty much everything in the iPhone's user interface responds to a single tap. There are a few places where a double tap does something different and it is well worth learning about those since once you do you will unearth some hidden features that you didn't previously know about.
You have probably noticed that when you are watching a movie on your iPhone, the screen is showing a letterbox image. This is when there are two black lines under and above the picture, thus giving you a wider view. Actually, this is how the director sees the film, and how it was originally shot. Yet, there are some individuals who cannot stand to have letterbox on while they are watching a film.
If you would prefer to watch your movies in full screen rather than in the widescreen letterbox format then a double tap will change the view for you. Simply double tap while you are watching a movie in letterbox format and it will change to a full screen view for you right away. Bear in mind though that some movies were designed for widescreen viewing so you may lose the edges of the picture if you do this. This can also cause a problem with subtitled movies since some of the subtitles may be lost to the narrower view.
To get back to the original letterbox view then all you need to do is repeat the double tap and it will switch back. This makes it so easy to switch between the views and find the one that you prefer for the movie you are watching. This is a great feature of the iPhone and it is also one that you don't hear mentioned a lot. Once you start using it though you will wonder how you coped without knowing it before.
You will also find that double tapping works in other programs on your iPhone too. If you are using Photos, Google Maps or Safari then a double tap will zoom into whatever you tapped on. The zoom is twice the size of the original so if for example you are viewing an online newspaper then this could give you a much better view of the article you are interested in. You will also find a few other places that double tap does something for you so why not grab your iPhone right now and see what a double tap can do for you?
