Different Areas and Equipment in Bowling Centers
By: Dark Sith
It used to be that bowling is done on bowling alleys, that is, places where the only thing you can find are bowling lanes and bowlers, and the only thing you can do is play bowling. However, ever since the popularity of the sport, families have started to frequent bowling alleys and so, the usual alleys have evolved to something that is much more family-friendly: the bowling center.
Bowling centers have the usual assortment of bowling lanes, just like the old bowling alleys. However, there are new additions that are placed to cater to the other members of the family, particularly, the children. Modern bowling centers have several things other than the bowling alleys themselves like mini-restaurants, arcades, and even foosball tables. To say that a bowling center is like a mini-entertainment center might not be too far from the truth.
Bowling centers usually have large halls since they contain numerous bowling alleys and lanes. There are no supporting beams to speak of since bowling requires that the player have a clear view on the lanes. Bowling centers are instead supported by its walls together with the beams at the back of the alleys, where the restaurants and other amenities are usually located.
There would be about 50 or so bowling alleys in one center, with each alley consisting of 70 x 3.5-foot lanes, two 60-foot gutters (one on each side), two 60-foot borders, and the front wall. Beyond the wall, hidden from players' views, the bowling ball machine takes care of placing the ten pins as well as relaying the ball back to the player via tunnels that connect to the ball-sorting machine.
For the people who are really not into bowling, there is also the gaming area where billiard or pool tables may be found. Usually, each pool has its own light as well as a mini-bar. The mini-bar is bound to serve more varieties of alcoholic drinks as the usual patrons of the gaming area are adults.
Arcades may or may not be put together with the billiard and pool tables, but they're usually placed in an enclosed area. The reason for this is that arcade and video game machines are often noisy, so to avoid distracting or disturbing the bowlers, they are separated. Most of those who come to this place are the kids and adolescents.
Of course, the bowling center must have a reception area or desk where customers can pay, borrow bowling shoes and billiards equipment, or make other inquiries. All bowling centers should be properly lit. Most are air-conditioned. Fine bowling centers are usually the venue for small to world-class bowling tournaments.
