Cartridge Rolls For Deburring

By: Hispanic

Cartridge rolls are among different kinds of deburring tools, often manufactured by wrapping abrasive cloth materials to custom-sized mandrel. Deburring cartridge rolls also have many types; silicon carbide, grain, aluminum oxide grain or alumina grain. Configured mostly for deburring, blending, polishing and deflashing, deburring cartridge rolls are available in different lengths and sizes, with its characteristic abrasive grain located on its outer layer.

Designed to be durable and virtually indestructible, cartridge rolls can be straight, half-taper, full taper and sidewall. Effective in removing edge breaking and machine tool marks, such rolls are often connected to a hand-held deburring tool.

Burrs are the normal by product of the stamping process. Burrs are often not acceptable, usually for safety reasons, either for handling or for product safety (burrs cutting into insulation, or mechanical chafing). On the other hand, deburring is done by tumbling parts in a barrel or a vibratory bowl, along with finishing media. Ceramic media is often used for steels. For softer materials, plastic media, walnut shells etc can be used. This type of deburring is usually confined to unfinished materials. For materials that are already finished, such as pre-plated or pre-painted materials, other forms of deburring such as belt sanding or hand filing will have to be done with the associated higher costs.

Speaking of the other forms of deburring, there are many methods to achieving deburring; hand deburring, semiautomatic deburring, abrasive flow machining, thermal energy method, electrochemical machining, high pressure deburring, and so on and so forth. Nevertheless, only hand and semiautomatic deburring involves cartridge rolls, and such instances involve repetitive grinding and filing motion.

The use of cartridge rolls may take extra effort on your part, compared to using other tools. Then again, it's the best tool to be used when controlled or steady deburring is need, or else the part or material will be thrown, which can cause you injury or worse. Keep in mind, always use fresh rolls after every deburring, because they have a tendency to wear out.
