Career Test: Do Your Homework Beforehand

By: George Purdy

Students are beginning to realize that even a great education with a bachelor's degree from a four-year school or a vocational school doesn't guarantee getting a good job. People are seeing the need to attend career-oriented training classes to hone the skills necessary to land that dream job with a good salary and lots of opportunities for growth and challenge. A quick perusal through the yellow pages will show you a large number of ads for career training companies. A career test is a way to get a leg up on your career search.

This is an era of extreme competition. For each position in the newspaper classifieds or on the Internet, there are battalions of candidates prepared to do battle if necessary to get a letter of acceptance. The number of applicants is growing at a much greater rate than the number of positions. For this reason, hiring procedures are as much aimed at eliminating undesirable applicants as at finding qualified ones.

Career assessment is a necessary tool in today's job market. We need to gain a greater advantage over our competition for any given position. Career counselors have developed tests to find potential job matches in measure with one's aptitude.

Activities related to recruiting new people are more and more being outsourced to outsourcing firms that have specialized in offering recruitment services. These firms provide a number of services: developing a highly job-specific career test; administering the test to applicants interested in the position; screening these applicants, based on their test results; taking care of job interviews and the sending appointment letters of those organizations seeking to appoint new people.

Preparing to take a career test requires an understanding of the skills we will need as a requirement of the job. It would be a very wise move to visit the career website of the firm that is offering jobs in the field you are looking for. People already working in the position you are looking for will have posted on the careers' page on the website. We should read what they say. Keep in mind the skills needed as we prepare further for the test.

To help you prepare for a career test, you can find a big number of coaching classes, discussion forums, job oriented newsletters and so on. But, what you have to do is to analyze your own needs and choose one of those that fits your budget. It is very important to remember that something that works for someone else doesn't have to work for you.

People are increasingly realizing that a bachelor's degree doesn't guarantee good employment or a decent salary anymore. Career training classes are gaining popularity. In today's job market, there are literally hundreds of applicants for every available position. To be chosen, we must go the extra mile to get the competitive advantage over other candidates. A career test administered by job counselors helps us in our career search by identifying jobs that fit both our preferences and our abilities. Such a test can help you in career assessment. Career coaching classes, job newsletters, online job forums, and career counselors can help you to prepare for the application process.
