Cable or Satellite - Which Is The Better Choice?

By: Galen Randel.

Ten years of lousy service is something I do not easily forget. That was how long I had to rely on cable television for all of TV viewing. Before I ever signed up for cable television, I always expected the quality of the reception to be quite exceptional. After all, that's what their commercials said. In my opinion they were wrong. I was never satisfied with the picture quality.

I'm not sure weather it was the poor reception or the price hikes that were responsible for most of my grief during the time I was a cable television customer. I experienced many more price increases with cable TV than I have with satellite TV service.

Cable TV has probably come a long way since I was a customer almost ten years ago. The picture quality is probably improved greatly thanks to digital cable. I do know, however, that they still like to increase prices frequently. Since the only option for high-speed Internet in my area is from the cable television company, I remain a reluctant cable customer today.

Since I was never satisfied with cable television, I decided to try satellite television back around 1998. After researching my options, I decided to sign up with Dish Network. I chose Dish Network because the programming packages they offered were more in line with my tastes than the packages being offered by the other satellite TV service.

From the very beginning I was very happy with Dish Network and I still am very happy with it today. I have had very few problems with my service and only one significant outage in the 9 years or so I have had it.

The cable TV companies love to make up stories about how bad weather can disrupt satellite TV service. Yes, it's true that bad weather can cause problems with satellite television, but in my experience this is a rare occurrence and it only happens with very bad weather, which we do not see very often. Don't let the cable television companies fool you into thinking that satellite TV service has a lot of problems with weather-related outages.

Despite what the cable television companies say about weather-related disruptions on satellite TV, in my experience, it is actually cable television that is more subject to weather-related outages. I recall outages with cable that were caused by wind storms, ice storms and snow storms that brought cable TV lines down and left me without service for a day or two. In contrast, the weather-related outages I have experienced with Dish Network have been brief - lasting no more than a half hour at most.

If you compare Dish Network to cable television on the basis of reliability, I would vote for Dish Network without hesitation. Beyond the rare weather-related outage on Dish Network, all you normally have to worry about is whether or not you have electrical power. Since you receive the signal directly from the satellite, you do not have to rely on wires that might be brought down in a storm. As long as you have power, you can watch TV. Heck, even if you don't have power and you do have your own generator, you can watch satellite TV even when the lines are down!
