Better Guitar Tuning, Better Guitar Playing

By: Lyd M.

Guitar tuning can be difficult for the beginning guitarists. However, this exercise is necessary because the wood that makes up your guitar does lose its shape over time. Your guitar strings will also lose its tension. Thus, every time you pick up your guitar, it will need some sort of tuning. Some tips are given below to make it a breeze for you to carry out your guitar tuning.

1. Cultivate guitar tuning habit

Guitar tuning can be a hassle but you must make it a habit. This will ensure that your guitar sounds pitch right and will enable you to pick up on the little mistakes that you have made. You can then improve on these mistakes. Tune your guitar every time you pick it up. I cannot emphasize enough on it.

2. Piano

There are many different ways to approach guitar tuning and one of the ways is to tune the guitar by using another instrument like the piano. When you use this method, you're tuning your guitar by ear using a different instrument that can play the relevant guitar notes for you. So when you are tuning your guitar, you are trying to make, for example, the E note on your guitar sound the same as the E note on the piano. Once you think they sound the same, you do the same for the other strings.

3. Tuner

Besides the piano, you can use a battery operated tuner. I would recommend this method especially if you are just a beginning guitarist. This is very easy to operate. All you have to do is switch it on and make sure that it is pointed to the note that you want to tune. For example, if you want to tune the G string, make sure your dial on the tuner is also G. Then all you have to do is strike the G string. Once the green light on the tuner lights up, you have managed to successfully tune your G string. You do the same for all the other strings.

Before you carry out any warm up on your guitar, ensure that you tune your guitar correctly. This is a vital step and should not be skipped in your rush to play the guitar. You may not notice it in the beginning but once you diligently tune your guitar, your ear will become trained enough to distinguish the right pitch. This will further assist you in your guitar playing.
