Arkansas' Lyon College; Worth a Look
By: Daniel Z. Kane
Arkansas may not come to mind immediately when students start their search for a selective, high quality liberal arts college. But, Arkansas actually has two such institutions within its borders.
Lyon College is one of the two. While well respected by educators and publications like "U.S. News and World Report", Lyon does not now enjoy the high profile of some of its better known peers.
Lyon manages to attract good students. The middle 50% of the most recent incoming class earned an ACT composite of between 23-29, and more than 7 of 10 ranked in the top quartile of their high school graduating classes.
With just 500 students, getting lost in the crowd is not a danger...there is no crowd. And, as you'd expect at a college so small, there is a very low faculty to student ratio.
Further contributing to Lyon's feeling of smallness and community is the fact that close to 90% of its students choose to live on campus.
Two characteristics which set Lyon apart from many of its peer schools is a campus-wide Honor Code and an exceptionally well developed, endowed international studies program.
Another distinguishing characteristic is Lyon's cost of attendance, which makes it far less expensive than most of its peers.
For students looking for a liberal arts college with able students, small classes, modest tuition and fees, and a strong sense of community, Lyon may be tough to beat.
