Anabolic Steroids and Your Blood (Part 1)

By: Mick Hart

Even a weight trainer engaged in heavy lifting will return out of the norm results even with no use of anabolic steroids. Now we all know the liver is one of the most important organs in the body Duh! - they all are! Detoxification, numerous processes involved in the conversion of food for energy, growth and repair.
The secretions aid fat digestion producing high density lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) and destroying the undesirable low density lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL-C). Did you know that even when we are resting, that our liver receives about 30% of our blood supply? You have a good look at the meat counter the next time you go to the supermarket.
Liver function tests do in fact detect enzyme levels (biological catalyst, for more info, do a biochemistry course). A bodybuilder's intense workouts will break down massive quantities of skeletal muscle cells (thats if you have been training properly).
This and intramuscular injections can distort test results. So what did I need to tell my Doctor so we know what to worry about and what he can sigh about people wanting to have bulging muscles? The tests involve a range of enzyme markers; let's look at the ones pertinent to weight lifters.
We will now go over the guidelines for measuring a complete blood hematology profile although once again just concentrating on a few of the indexes that of greater interest to us bodybuilders.
Hemoglobin: Let's take a look at the quantity of major blood protein of red blood cells and we certainly don't want a low count test result as this would imply that you have anemia. The more likely causes are unbalanced diet and or deficiency of Vit B12 and folic acid in the blood. But no sweat, this is easily put right with a nice helping of liver or spinach.
Red cells: Now this is a weird one as it measures the quantity of red cells in a certain amount of blood. Our bone marrow produces these blood cells and they only survive for around 3 weeks, but certain toxins such as alcohol can lead to macrocytosis. This is whereby the cells get larger causing problems when trying to pass through tiny blood capillaries.
HCT ratio PCV (haematocrit ratio, packed cell volume / MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin / MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations) - are all red cell indexes describing the shape and content of red blood cells.
ESR (erythocyte sedimentation rate) is a good broad indication of a patient's health. My one always comes in high when suffering from an infection (some treatments can compromise the immune system). Many inflammatory conditions can also return a high test result.
An adequate proportion of platelets is vital for the blood system and it's ability to clot. A low count in platelets will lead to bad bruising and excessive bleeding from a wound. This can also be caused through the use of aspirin while in an ECA stack.
A high while cell blood count would be the result of a viral or bacterial infection which increases production, releasing more antibodies to get the infection under control. The advantage of possessing good muscle mass comes into play here as protein is required to synthesis antibodies.
Every test that has come before are just run of the mill tests that will be explained to the patient by his GP in the consultancy, unless there should be something really serious revealed. But the results of the tests featured in part 2; although average for big beast body builders, will knock a GP for six if he isn't used to his patients looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Part 2 coming soon).
