An Intro to Marketing as an Affiliate
By: Colin McNulty
Marketing as an Affiliate is a popular and cutting edge home based business that's increasing in size daily. Affiliate marketers promote internet merchandise that are not their own. The online business you are promoting will pay you a commission for each time a visitor clicks from your site to their site, (Pay Per Click); each time a prospect enters contact information through you, (pay-per-lead); or for each sale made through you, (Pay Per Sale). This is a mutually beneficial deal for both the online business and the affiliate marketer: the online business does not pay until it gets results, and the marketer can make impressive commissions.
Remember, it is quite possible to fail at Marketing as an Affiliate. If you are considering getting into the internet marketing business, there are a few basic tips to guide you:
Choose a product you can stand behind. If you are not certain about the merchandise you have chosen to advertise, do not try to pretend. Possible clients will not believe in your product if you do not back it whole heartedly, and you won't if you in fact do not truthfully believe in it. Definitely think about buying sample services from a range of places. Email the seller, explain that you are thinking about becoming an affiliate for them, and that you would like to try their services out. Many online businesses should be pleased to issue you a free sample.
Ask questions. Is it possible to monitor your referrals on their site. What is the online business's conversion rate? What's their schedule for commission payments? Ask why you should become their affiliate? What are the setup costs? Be picky if they are not willing to accommodate your questions in as much detail as you need. How do they monitor your referrals? Do not be coy about asking comprehensive questions of affiliate vendors.
Use a Search engine optimized website. The success of your site depends on traffic. Search engines tend to love sites that are full of accurate subject matter, have a great deal sites pointing to them, and that generate a reasonable amount of visitors already. The information on your website is very significant. You will have to have at the minimum 1 article for each top tier keyword phrase that is relevant to your website. Care must be taken however, do not just magic up content for the sake of the search engines, or your browsers will not stick around to click on your profitable affiliate links. It's correct to include keywords, but create for browsers in the first instance.
Publish online articles. To spread the word about your website, it would be of benefit to position yourself as an expert in your industry. Publish articles about topics in your field that your browsers may be searching for, and enter them to article banks. Be sure you include a back link to your website so it will raise the link count to yourwebsite and make your website more likable to search engines.
Use auto responders. When a potential customer emails your website, you should have an automatic email responder system in place to email them a free report, a discount code, tidbits of interest, information, anything that will get them returning to your website.
Email list storage. A good method for this is to provide registration for your online e-magazine. Never store email addresses that browsers haven't supplied you with clear go ahead to use. This can be construed as spam and is a breach of the Can Spam legislation. Consider also offering inducements in trade for their emails, e.g. free reports, discounts etc.
Don't sell, pre sell. This is crucial to operating a successful Marketing as an Affiliate website. The key as an affiliate marketer is not to drive hard sell sales letters pushing your affiliate product. The online business you are marketing will already have a sales letter like that on their website, which the visitor will see after clicking their link from your website. As a replacement, make a website that is aimed at the interests of visitors who you expect will want to purchase the product. Include add ons, podcasts, reviews, videos etc. Consider producing a web page proposing the product you are marketing, but do not focus your entire website on it. As a replacement, try to make it a cool site for visitors who you want to click through and purchase it.
Marketing as an Affiliate can be a very worthwhile and lucrative home based business. Warning: it is not for people who prefer money for nothing. A victorious affiliate marketing business is most definitely a full time role, at least in the beginning anyway. But if you follow the advice above, it will be likely to be worth it in the end.
