An Intro to Affiliate Marketing

By: Colin McNulty

Affiliate Marketing is a accepted and high tech home business that is developing every day. Affiliate promoters advertise web-based merchandise that are not their own. The Internet business you are promoting will pay you a commission for every time a browser clicks through your website to their site, (Pay Per Click); every time somebody enters contact info through your website, (Pay Per Lead); or for every sale made through you, (Pay Per Sale). This is a mutually beneficial deal for both the Internet business and you the affiliate marketer: the Internet business doesn't have to pay you until it sells its merchandise, and you can rake in impressive commissions.

That said, not everyone succeeds at Affiliate Marketing. If you're thinking about getting into the affiliate marketing business, here are a few basic tips to assist you:

Select some goods you are willing to stand behind. If you are not confident about the merchandise you have selected to sell, do not try to pretend. Potential customers will not be prepared to buy your service if you do not approve it utterly, and you will not do this if you in fact do not genuinely believe in it. Definitely think about obtaining sample services from a range of sites. Email the seller, explain that you are planning to becoming an affiliate of there's, and that you'd like to trial their services. Significant numbers of Internet businesses should be pleased to send you a free sample.

Ask questions. Do they supply promotional items to assist you getting started? Do they pay per click, per lead, per sale, etc? How do they record your referrals? Ask why should you become their affiliate? Don't be coy about asking thorough questions of affiliate sellers. What are the setup costs?

Use a Search engine friendly site. Traffic is the Key to your success. Search engines tend to love websites that have a lot of pertinent substance, have many websites linking to it, and that have a noticeable amount of visitors already. The content on your website is very crucial. You'll have to have at a minimum 1 article for every important keyword phrase that is important to your website. Warning, do not just create content just for the search engines, or your browsers will not hang around long enough to click on your high paying affiliate links. Be careful to include keywords, but create for visitors predominantly.

Become an online Author. In order to tell the world about your website, it would be of assistance to position yourself as a leading expert in your niche. Publish articles about particular aspects in your field that your browsers will definitely be wanting to find, and submit them to article collection sites. Do not forget to include a link back to your website as it will amplify the link count to yourwebsite and make your website more tempting to search engines.

Take advantage of autoresponders. When a potential customer emails you, you should have an automatic email responder system created to send them a discount code, a free report, tidbits of interest, anything that will get them returning to your website.

Email list storage. An effective way to do this is to make available registration for an online e-zine. You must not record email addresses that browsers have not given you clear authorisation to use. This can be construed as spam and is unethical. You can also offer incentives in trade for their emails, e.g. entry into a contest, give aways, discounts etc.

Don't sell, pre sell. This is vital to running a successful Affiliate Marketing website. Your job as an affiliate marketer is not to peddle hard sell sales letters for your affiliate product. The Internet business you are marketing will have a similar salesletter on their own website, which the browser will read after clicking on the link from your website. As an alternative, craft a website that caters to the interests of readers who you expect will want to procure the product. Include a discussion forum, blogs, informative articles, podcasts, reviews etc. Consider writing a web page advocating the product, but do not single mindedly concentrate the full website on the product. As an alternative, make your web page an important destination for readers who you want to click through and purchase it.

Affiliate Marketing is often a positively rewarding and productive home business. But it is absolutely not for people who want an easy life. A victorious affiliate marketing business is a full time role, at least at first anyway. Although if you stick to these simple tips, it will be likely to be worth your trouble.
