A Tattoo As A Portal To The Spiritual World
By: James Beckett
When you put a tattoo on your body, that's pretty big private decision. Sometimes the motivation to get a tattoo is to feel closer to someone whether that's a sweetheart or someone in your family or to feel more connected to a group or cause you support. But when you permanently alter your physical body with a tattoo that's a pretty strong emotional and even spiritual commitment because you will have that image with you forever.
For many of us whether we are religious or not, we feel the draw to the spiritual world and a desire for a greater communication with that world. One image that seems to rise above any one religion that is a common "conduit" for that communication is the angel. That is why angels pop up in movies and become important parts of people's spiritual lives who may not have a direct connection to one religion.
You may have already noticed how peaceful it is having a figure or picture of an angel around at home or at work. From the teaching we get about angels, their jobs are to help people get connected to the spiritual world and the living things in that world, one of which is sometimes called "God". But angels have lots of jobs including being "guardian angels" over babies and maybe over us when we are in trouble or while we sleep.
So by using the image of an angel as one of your tattoos, you are taking that spiritual connection to the next level. Even if the angel you use in your tattoo image is not one specific angel that has a name, that spiritual being opens up your spiritual life and becomes part of that inner part of you called your "soul" that only you understand and can navigate.
An angel tattoo can be a guardian not only to keep spiritual evil away from you but to remind you to think about the eternal world and attend to your soul from time to time. In this busy world, its good to have a helper with us all the time to point us the right direction and remind us that we are spiritual beings and we should seek to live up to that part of ourselves. Your angel tattoo is in a perfect position to do that reminding because if she is in the right place on you physically, she will never be completely out of your sight or you out of hers.
While you may feel that you are the only one who has these spiritual longings, the popularity of angel tattoos shows that the desire for deeper life is common in lots of people. And when you start looking for the perfect angel to live in your tattoo, you will find a wonderful variety of angels to pick from. You can find sweet "angelic" creatures who are full of love and comfort or big strong guardian archangels with swords and a firm resolve to do their jobs well. You can even find angel tattoos that are downright intimidating to chase of evil spirits that will think twice about messing around with that spiritual fighter.
Sometimes a reason that is just as strong for people to enjoy an angel tattoo is because it is a sweet and poetic way to remind ourselves of someone we care about who may have crossed over into that spiritual world already. The angel in the tattoo can represent the real angel who may be serving as that spiritual connection you often feel with the departed loved one. The angel can be there to comfort you that while you may miss that dear one, you will see him or her in another life and the angel will be there to help make that happen.
People get tattoos for a lot of reasons including to have fun or just to look cool. And you can let your angel tattoo do double duty and not only give you can spiritual comfort but be a really good looking tat along the way. It will be a great conversation starter because it will help you find others who seek a spiritual life too. And if the angel brings us together as people and brings you closer to spiritual peace too, that's a pretty good outcome of getting a tattoo of an angel.
