A Guidebook On Domain Name
By: Simon Krandock
A domain name is the text name equivalent to the numeric IP address of a PC on the Internet. A domain name must be exclusive. Internet users get into your website with the help of a domain name. Thus, domain name is very important for a business.
Most people wonder whether they really need domain name or not. Well, for their business to be successful, they do need a domain name. Business is about building up credibility. Having a domain name is the first step towards that. Having a domain name like www. yourcompanyname.com makes your customers feel comfortable while doing business with you. There are many search engines that give importance to the home page of a particular domain.
Not that your business depends entirely on a domain name, but it does go a long way in determining success. So you must choose a domain name intelligently. First, you must select a proper register web address from the various options like .net, .org, .biz and others. However, ‘.com’ is the most popular extension and also it lends more credibility to your business. You can just use alphabets, numbers, and dashes as domain names but make sure there are no spaces and special symbols, because they are not permitted. Domain names are not case sensitive either.
You must keep the name short and simple. The name should not more than 14-16 characters. Make the name creative and exclusive. After all you would want the customers to remember the name. Do not make it too confusing. You can lose a customer because they have misspelled your name and have gone to another site. Make sure that you include at least one or two keywords in your domain name. This will help search engines to rank them. The register domain name must have some similarity with the business you are in.
If you can’t think of a good domain name you can go the Internet to look for domain names that were once used but have expired. You will get lots of ideas to choose from. Just make sure the domain name you choose is not in use otherwise you can get into copyright infringement issues with the original owner.
Also, do not register your domain name with your web host in order to avoid having to move your domain if and when you decide to change your host. Keep the two separate otherwise it is quite a hassle.
To be doubly sure, you can even register more than one domain name. For instance, many people register their company’s name in full and in short. You can even register wrongly or differently spelt names of your website. This becomes your trademark and you can be sure of no encroachments and yet have them all.
Once you have decided on a domain name, you must ask around and take a vote for the best name. Two brains are better than one, and many opinions will help you visualize how your domain name will be finally received out there. It is a good idea to ask your friends, relatives, colleagues, employees and others for ideas. You will be surprised how many ideas will come flowing your way. Make use of them.
Finally, keep the cost under control. There is much competition and if you look around, you can get the best possible rate. So, take your time and shop around for the best bargain.
